Kid Nichols First Game April 23, 1890

Kid Nichols won 361 games in his baseball career, the 7th highest total in major league history.  He was the youngest to win 300 games, reaching that total at the age of 30.   He is not well-known now in baseball circles since he pitched in the pre-1900 era.  He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1949.  He made his debut on April 23, 1890 with the  Boston Beaneaters.

Cy Young Debut Game August 6, 1890

Cy Young established numerous pitching records, some of which have stood for a century. Young compiled 511 wins and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. One year after Young's death, the Cy Young Awards created to honor the previous season's best pitcher.

In addition to wins, Young still holds the major league records for most career innings pitched,  most career games started (815), and most complete games (749).  He debuted on August 6, 1890 for the Cleveland Spiders.  All the newspapers I have looked did not have complete box scores (I guess they were not that important in 1890), but I did find this in my collection.

SANDY KOUFAX DEBUT JANUARY 28, 1955 BROOKLYN DODGERS

Sandy Koufax played his entire 12-year baseball career for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1955-1966).  He was inducted into the baeball Hall of Fame in 1972, the youngest former player to receive that honor, after retiring at the age of 31 in 1966
.
Koufax's career peaked with a run of six outstanding seasons from 1961-1966, before arthritis in his left elbow ended his career prematurely at age 30. He was named the NL MVP in 1963 and the Cy Young Awards in 1963, 1965, and 1966.   He also pitched 4 no-hitters, including one perfect game.

JOE DIMAGGIO DEBUT MAY 3, 1936 NEW YORK YANKEES

Joe DiMaggio played his entire 13-year career for the New York Yankees.  He is best known for his 56-game hitting streak in 1941,  a record that still stands.  In 1955, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.  DiMaggio won the MVP 3 times and was selected on the all-star team 13 times (the only player to be selected for the All-Star Game in every season he played). In his thirteen year career the Yankees won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships.

ROBERTO CLEMENTE DEBUT APRIL 18, 1955 PITTSBURGH PIRATES

Roberto Clemente played his entire 18-year baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1955-1972).  He won the National League MVP in 1966. Clemente participated in 12 All-Star games and also wwon 12 Gold Glove awards.  He also led the league in batting average in four different seasons.  He died in an airplane crash on December 31, 1972, while en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.  He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame posthumously in 1973, thus becoming the first Latin American to be selected and the only current Hall of Famer for whom the mandatory five-year waiting period has been waived since the wait was instituted in 1954.

RALPH KINER DEBUT APRIL 16, 1946 PITTSBURGH PIRATES

Ralph Kiner makes his debut with the Pirates on April 16, 1946.  He would go on to slug 369 home runs in 10 seasons before injuries derailed him at age 32.  He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975.
